hi all, happy friday yet again! :)

it's kinda crazy that I've been doing weekly updates and devlogs for a month now, and it's even crazier that this still doesn't feel like a routine! I just gotta keep it up I suppose.

like I suggested last week, this update is mostly focused on the visuals. I added a ton more decorations, and I greatly refactored how decorative sprites are placed within the cave. before, it was a single big function that did it all, and it was not fun to edit. now though, every single step in decorating a cave -- picking the type of decor, checking if it can be placed, trying again with a different sprite -- is in its own function. as such, I can tweak each one depending on the type of decor, giving me more control! for example, stalagmites have a higher chance of being large. so in general, this should speed up development for new types of decorations in the future!

~

new features:

- stalagmites, stalactites, and stalagnate decorative sprites

- more variants for jagged rocks/pebbles

questions for feedback:

- thoughts on the decorations so far?

- how does the player "feel"? do jumps, wall-clings, and wall-jumps feel fair? is the movement speed right for the size of the screen?

- at any point, were you unable to reach somewhere? if so, please share a screenshot that includes the seed!

todo:

- improve how decorations are placed, relative to each other

- more decorations! some parallax, plants, light sources

So happy to see you're satisfied with the decoration refactoring! Once again, I loved hopping around as this little bunny and found a really cool V shaped rock that also kinda looked like an altar I just chilled around.

I'm curious to see how you're going to fill the caves because while I enjoyed finding a big rock in a barren cave (broke the pattern of barrenness), I don't want to say that's what would be best. Have faith in the cute experience you want, don't steer too much to the conventions of gamifying the bunny even if that's what players and I might try to do!

I look forward to next friday!

thank you again for the kind words! it's funny you mention "gamifying" since I had asked a friend of mine what they like to see in games like this, since I wanted to cut out as much of the standard fluff that lots of games have. so, it's encouraging to hear that keeping gaming tropes to a minimum is a good goal :D
