demo released!
it's finally here! woohoo!!!
I'm ecstatic that the demo for Silt Spawn is finally out for people to play! currently, I'd say that there is about an hour of gameplay before there simply isn't any more new content to be had. but don't worry, there is an indicator at some point in the demo that signifies just how much content there is left.
but anyways, I'm very excited to hear what people think of the game in its current state! it's definitely a prototype, or perhaps it's in between prototype and a full vertical slice. either way, it's a polished experience that I'm happy to share! as I've been saying in various places, if this demo is received very well, and lots of people think this project is worth fleshing out into a 20+ hour game, then I'll consider greatly expanding it in the future! I'd say that even though the current experience is about an hour of gameplay, a lot of the groundwork is done so that it can pretty simply be expanded into a much longer game. that is, it would like take another year to add enough content that I have already loosely planned out.
if I continue working on this in the future, here's what I have planned out:
- 4+ new biomes to explore, each with their own special resources and buildings to unlock
- 5+ new NPCs, some of which can only be found in one type of biome
- rare items and structures, only one or two can be found in an individual cave
- cave systems! travel above ground between caves, or venture deeper into existing ones
- special events, to occasionally shake up the gameplay loop
- 4+ new tools
- 20+ new buildings
- 10+ new music tracks
- a fully realized plot
- many quality of life improvements
long story short, please share your thoughts and feedback! what do you like? what do you dislike? do you want more Silt Spawn in the future?
regardless of the reception though, I'm happy with this project! I'm very proud of how it turned out, especially given the restrained visuals. I learned so much from this project. stepping into sound design, making many mistakes with the code that turned into learning experiences, and being able to say "good enough" and moving on to the next thing. if Silt Spawn ends as a demo, then I'll be happy to have it as a crunchy, four-color side quest along the main path of my game dev journey :)
